Women’s XC places fourth at Franklin to open campaign

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – Thanks to a pair of top 15 finishes from freshman Emily Willson and junior Erin O'Connor, the Denison women's cross country team began their 2018 season with a fourth-place finish at the Franklin College Sodexo Grizzly Invite 6k race held at the Blue River Park cross country course in Shelbyville, Ind.

The Big Red's team score of 124 edged out fifth-place St. Mary-of-the-Woods, who finished with 125 points. Albion College finished in third place with 83 points, while Oberlin landed in second place (74) behind team champion, Mount Union (60).

DU finished with three runners in the top 20, including Willson's seventh-place finish out of 117 runners overall with a time of 24:29.90 in her college debut. O'Connor continued Denison's pace in 14th after logging a 25:24.90, and freshman Meagan Balch followed with a mark of 25:34.30 just three spots behind O'Connor in 17th place.

Sophomore Tommy Solberg, who clocked in at 26:57.40 in 44th place and sophomore Sarah Radziewicz (27:53.80 – 59th place) rounded out the scoring for the Big Red.

Denison will return to the course on Saturday, September 15 when they travel to Wheaton, Illinois to take part in the Gil Dodds Invitational at Wheaton College.
